Volleyball drops two on day two

The St. Kate's volleyball team went 0-2 on day two of the Mississippi River Classic volleyball tournament.

The Wildcats day got off to an early start with an 8 am game against Loras College. Their weariness showed in set one as they fell 25-13. After the set one wake up call, the Wildcats battled the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Loras for every point. Ultimately the Wildcats dropped sets two and three 25-21 and 25-23, but they looked to carry over the improved play into their second game of the afternoon.

The Wildcats returned to take on Clarke College, a team that was entering the game with a 19-7 record. The Wildcats and Crusaders played an extremely tight back and forth game. St. Kate's won the first set 25-17. Then dropped the second set 25-18. Set three was the longest set of the season for the Wildcats. After some intense action, they ultimately prevailed 31-29. Set four also went "overtime" for the teams, unfortunately this time Clarke prevailed 27-25. That forced the decisive fift set. Clarke came out strong in that set building an early lead on their way a 15-9 set victory.

Maria Hoffman
and Megan Ahlbrecht were both named to the all-tournament team. That made it two weekends in a row that the Wildcats have had two members named to the all-tournament team.

St. Kate's is now 11-14 on the season. After playing 8 games in the past ten days, the Wildcats will now turn their attention to their four remaining MIAC games over the next 14 days.  Wednesday the team heads to Winona to take on St. Mary's University at 7pm.
